Apollo Belvedere
Painting of the Apollo Belvedere sculpture located in the Vatican Museum. Apollo is one of the most important Olympian deities in classical Greek and Roman religion and mythology. Apollo was the god of archery, music and dance, truth and prophecy, healing and diseases, the Sun and light, and more.
The Apollo Belvedere was part of the collection of Cardinal Giuliano della Rovere. When the cardinal was elected pope, taking the name Julius II (r. 1503-1513), the statue was transferred to the Vatican. The Apollo was brought to the Louvre, Paris by Napoleon after his 1796 Italian Campaign. After the fall of Napoleon (1815), the Apollo was repatriated to the Vatican, where it has remained ever since.
